User guide

For attorneys and staff who work in Kosmos every day. Each page takes one part of the application and walks through the things you do there, naming the buttons and fields as the screen does.

Start with Getting started: signing in, the Dash, finding your way around, search, keyboard shortcuts and your own settings.

Running the practice:

  • Matters: finding, opening, running and closing a matter.
  • Contacts: clients and everyone else the firm deals with.
  • Tasks: the firm's to-do list, the board and checklists.
  • Calendar: hearings, deadlines and appointments.
  • Intakes and client forms: prospective clients, from first call to client.

Billing:

  • Time and expenses: recording time, expenses and flat fees, and what happens once an entry is billed.
  • Invoicing: turning recorded work into invoices and following them until they are paid.
  • Taking payments: recording money received, and letting clients pay online.
  • Trust accounting: client money held in trust, and the figures Kosmos shows for it.
  • Reports: what each report shows and how its figures are arrived at.

Working a case:

  • Documents: a matter's documents, the viewer, labels and searching the case file.
  • Timeline, witnesses and highlights: pulling the facts out of the documents and organising them.
  • Email: filing correspondence on a matter from Gmail.
  • Notes: the firm's library and the notes kept on a matter.
  • Drafts: drafting in LibreOffice with the AI's edits as tracked changes.
  • Case law: finding case law with the AI and keeping it on a matter.
  • AI chat: asking an AI model about a matter, and what it can and cannot see.

Looking after Kosmos:

  • Settings: the firm's details, users, permissions and the lists the rest of Kosmos draws on.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: every shortcut, by screen.
